I was at the Fogerty concert about a month ago at the Hollywood Bowl, and before he played Who'll stop the rain he said that he was at Woodstock, and he wrote the song on his way hitchicking home. Just for reference, it rained like crazy one of the days at Woodstock, hence the third verse "heard the singer playing, how we cheared for more..."
