39 Years Ago - American Top 40 - 28 Aug 1971
"And now the current hit by the star rock group that's been together for 13 years. The first 10 years they sold no records, the last three years they sold 35 million dollars worth. Their first gig paid them 15 dollars for a nights work. That's $3.75 a man. Now-a-days their price is a little higher. As high as $90,000 for a single concert. That's how it is when you're hot, you're hot. And the people will pay your price if you give them what they want. The group started out as a quartet thirteen years ago, and they became a trio last February when the leader's brother decided there were things he had to do alone and so he split. So the three remaining members carry on with no intention of replacing him. Their latest single is number six this week. A song called Sweet Hitch-Hiker. Here's Creedence Clearwater Revival." Casey Kasem introduction for Sweet Hitchhiker, 28 August 1971, American Top Forty.
