Maybe the song you're looking for is POORBOY SHUFFLE from the LP "WILLIE AND THE POORBOYS." If it had a harmonica in it, then this has got to be your song.

i think the tune your thinking of is "side o' the road ",,,it's an instrumental,,kind of a take off on Booker t.and the MG's tune ,,"Green Onions"..It's followed on the album by "EFFIGY"....Cruisin' Lou..(the Creedence Guy....)

Everybody's replies were helpful -- but none of the songs suggested were the right one. The piece was almost more "symphonic" -- arranged fully with a slow riff and guitar work repeating in and around it. It may be a case of my not knowing that it was a different album and different group being played at the time. It was, after all, about 30 years ago when I heard it. I'm thinking it was on Cosmo's Factory or Green River -- yet when I look at the table of contents and try them all it isn't there. Frustrating, let me tell you :-) Thanks to everyone who gave it a shot.
