Nov. 29, 1969: Creedence Clearwater Revival performed Saturday night before a capacity house at the Forum. From left, Stu Cook, Doug Clifford, John Fogerty. Not shown is Tom Fogerty.
Los Angeles Times pop music critic Robert Hilburn reported in the Dec. 1, 1969, edition:
As the end of the year nears, there are many highlights that made 1969 a particularly exciting period for rock music: The return of Elvis Presley to public appearances, Bob Dylan’s new country ballad style, the Rolling Stones and the excellent new album by the Band.
But the most rewarding event this year in rock music may well have been the emergence of Creedence Clearwater Revival as both the best and most popular (it ranks second only to England’s Beatles in sales) rock group in America.
Before a capacity house Saturday night at the Inglewood Forum, Creedence gave a masterful 12-song summary of the irresistible delta sound it has built around a tight, intense instrumental rhythm and John Fogerty’s almost perfect country blues vocals.
In less than a year, Fogerty (lead guitar and vocals), his brother Tom (rhythm guitar), Doug Clifford (drums) and Stu Cook (bass) have achieved a popularity unmatched by an American rock group of the 1960s. All three albums have passed the $1 million mark in sales and the last three singles have been two-sided hits.
Lou Robin, whose Sight and Sound Productions produced the concert Saturday, said all 18,300 tickets had been sold last Monday and there was enough demand to have filled the Forum for a second show.
It is significant that Creedence has achieved this phenomenal popularity with a style that was running counter to most of the rock movement a few months ago. Ignoring the experimental efforts of most recent rock groups, Creedence’s music is built on the basic roots of rock…..
