I looked it up in another dictionary, and it's a scarecrow, or a quite large doll, maybe a bit scary. I can see why they hated it so much. I've even seen a pic of them were they are posing in matching costumes and wigs, dressed up like golliwogs. My heart bleeds for them...

Sounds like a Steven King novel, scary, the band dressing up, even scarier. BT

Sometimes I wonder if John and the band had a revelation or something. I have heard the music they made as the Golliwogs, and it's pretty average. It sounds like they are trying to emulate the Beatles. They accepted the ridiculous name and costumes given to them by the recordcompany (as you say, very scary). I mean, they were like marionettes, they were golliwogs! And then, almost over night, they take the name Creedence Clearwater Revival, start playing hardcore, bluesy rock'n'roll with an intensity that takes your breath away, like they had done nothing else in their lives! So what happened? Whatever it was, I am so glad it did.

Default Name

Not only the best band ever but also the best named, a very apt name given the style of music. Creedence Clearwater Revival instantly brings to mind a haunting mysterious misty country landscape inhabited by a people whose history is awash with legends of strange goings on. You can almost see the healers, hear the fortune tellers, taste the moonshine and you can definitely smell the swamp.
