I think the correct line is "Cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis, pumped a lot of pain down in New Orleans. But I never saw the good side of a city, 'til I hitched a ride on a riverboat queen" (not "going to a home in New Orleans", although it wasn't a bad guess).

Pumped alot of pain? I thought I read official lyrics that said "Pumped alot of 'Tane". Oh well.

Where did you read that? I am pretty sure it's "pumped a lot of pain". It says so on the "All in one"-page on this site, and I read it in a notesheet, and I think (although I'm not 100 % sure) that I read it in the book "Bad Moon Rising", where John said so himself.

Apologies! On the "All-in-one" page it does actually say "pumped a lot of 'tane", I was wrong. But I am still pretty sure that it's "pumped a lot of pain" that is the correct line, I know I have read this several places. And anyway, "pumped a lot of pain" is far more coherent with "Cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis", than "pumped a lot of 'tane", don't you think? At least to me it makes more sense.

JLB

"Tane" is Octane, Like in Gasoline. Fogerty was probably trying to say that in the past, he bused tabels
in Mephis and pumped gas in New Orleans.

im pretty sure its "pumped a lot of pain". The reason that it might say "tane" in some lyrics is that both John Fogerty and Tina Turner sings a bit unclear and might give the impression that its "pumped a lot of tane". Anyway i have read a lot of places that at least Creedence is singing "pain".
