if you change the spelling to -reign , that will give you some insight .

John was never a writer that was blunt .... he covered some ideas by using 'play on words '

If you consider the reigning government at the time ...NIXON , and the war in Viet Nam , then you can see that this is John asking ... when will this war stop !

War is a rain on any sunny day .

When CCR played Woodstock in 1969 they were on stage during a rain storm, and this inspired John to write "Have you ever seen the rain", which appeared on the "Pendulum" album the following year.

It has been my understanding that the song is about the "hard" rain that comes from nuclear fallout. This song came out at the height of the anti-war protests of the 60s and the pervasive fear of nuclear holocaust (civil fallout shelters, backyard bomb shelters, etc.).

Consider the idea of a nuclear winter and this line from the song:

Yesterday, and days before, sun is cold and rain is hard,
I know; been that way for all my time.
’til forever, on it goes through the circle, fast and slow,
I know; it can’t stop, I wonder.

I have always thought that the novel "On the Beach" was an influence behind the song. The book came out in 1957 and the movie starring Gregory Peck came out in 1959. It was an anti-war movie that looked at the extinction of mankind from nuclear war. The story is primarily located in Australia wherre people await the coming deadly radiation after the entire northern hemisphere has already died from fallout.

It has always been my understanding that John Foggerty is an anti-U.S.,self-plagerizing, fortunate son.The so called song, Deja Vous All Over Again, is a Yogi Berraism, as well as a blatant rip-off of Have You Ever Seen The Rain. The alegged singer/song writer/limited composer, cannot even be original ,after a first failed attempt at a comeback.Yogi Berra and CCR should sue John Foggerty for recurring Deja Vous All Over Again.(Vietnam may sue now, Iraq has to wait until the third failed comeback-attempt.)
