That's it! The mistake was assuming it was an all instrumental tune. I was the drummer in the band and I learned it as an instrumental and the guys must have cued it up to that part for me to hear (we did all instrumentals - NONE of us could sing a lick!). I mostly remember our version - slow and steady as opposed to the real one which speeds up (a lot!).

Very beautiful song. Played with a windpipe if that helps. It was on a vinyl album I used to have but cannot remember which one. Hope someone finds it. There is a TV commercial currently using it. I will find out for what company and track it down if no one comes up with it here first.
