My guess is that when Fogerty refers to Jody, he is refering to the old army/marine character made up by drill sergants. Jody was always the guy who got to stay home, pick up your girl friend, and have all kinds of fun while you got to go off to war.

As far as I can gather, Jody is a imaginary person made up by Army and Marine drill sergants. Jody is always refered to as being the guy who doesn't get drafted and stays home to "look after" your girlfriend or run around partying etc... Maybe John heard this alot in his service days and simply used the name in his songs because... I don't know. That's only my opinion.
