Because allot of their songs arn't country, therfore allot of country purists would disagree to label them as that. Although I admit John was heavily influenced by some country music. I watched 'Cool Hand Luke' the other day and one of the chain gang members was singing while Newman was digging a hole. I heard him sing a stripped down pure blues country version of both 'Midnight Special' and 'Cotton Fields' and it hit me like a blue grass band would. I don't know who sung these songs first, but any version moves me.
