From what I've read in previous John Fogerty interviews posted on-line, The song "Green River" was actually written about a place north of the Bay Area, in Napa County, called Putah Creek. I believe the Fogerty family spent memorable time there while John and his brother Tom were growing up and that is what inspired the song.

I heard an interview with him on the radio and he said it was a vacation spot he and his family went to when he was little. "Ol' Cody Jr." was the owner of the camp and they called him that because he was supposedly a descendant of Buffalo Bill Cody. I'm sure it is a drink but the song's name came from the camp's name.
