joel 16.01.2006 12:10

what songs did they play at woodstock?

joel 25.01.2006 13:58

I've heard that they played Green river but that's just one, does anyone else know anything about this?

becca_d 25.01.2006 21:03

Sorry, Joel, I don't know either! I think this performance was before they released Willy and the Poorboys, that narrows it down a little... I'm sorry I couldn't be to more help.

joel 26.01.2006 13:35

no worries. Your'e the onlyone who has tryed to answer my question and that I'm thankful for.

becca_d 26.01.2006 23:53

Creedence played at Woodstock in the summer of '69, right? I have a quite interesting story on their performance there. Maybe you know it, but I'll tell it in case you don't. They got on stage quite late in the evening, and started playing. No response. The hippies were all stoned and asleep. So after a few songs into the set John stopped, and shouted out to the audience:"I don't know about you, but I'm up here having a great time!". Still no response. John has said about what happened next, "this moment I will never forget as long as I live". About a mile out in the audience, somebody was flicking a lighter, and a guy shouted: "don't worry about it, John, we're with you!" John has said; "We played the rest of the show for that guy". Does'nt seem like Woodstock was their best moment, huh? Well, I hope you enjoyed this story, and that you find out what songs they played!

Mary Lou 08.02.2006 18:41

Becca_d, the story is very exciting! I couldn't help laughing:) I had no information about their performance in Woodstock. The only one thing I knew is that they PLAYED there and that they forbad to release this performance for they considered it to be not very good. I've watched "Woodstock" on DVD - EVERYBODY there played "not very good"!!! I missed Creedence very much while watching...
I enjoyed Arlo Guthrie & Ten Years After performance, and to my surprise - The Who & Joe Cocker were great too (in fact, I don't like them very much..). But Canned Heat and Crosby Stills & Nash disappointed me:-(. I really liked Joan Baez, but guess her vocal is just too great for "snuffling & uncivilized country music";)

becca_d 09.02.2006 23:26

I am glad you enjoyed the story! I guess this was a contributing factor to Creedence not appearing on the "Woodstock" movie. What a shame they are not in it...

joel 13.02.2006 18:10

That story made me sad. ungrateful hippies!

becca_d 14.02.2006 17:20

It was very bad luck that they got on late at night. I'm sure the response would have been much better if they had played earlier that day. I guess the hippies had quite a party that day... Too bad for them! Ha, ha. There they were at Woodstock, and had a great oportunity to se a great band, but then if somebody asked them the next day how it was, all they could tell them was "I forgot, I was stoned". Moral: Don't use drugs, you miss great things!

cheeriokid 15.02.2006 07:00

My friend burned me a 4 disc woodstock set, and it has four CCR songs on it.. Commotion, Green River, Ninety-Nine and a Half, and I Put a Spell on You. Theres a little clapping and yelling at the beginning of the songs... It's good, but, sadly, its the only live CCR I've heard.

Jim_ITALY 04.03.2006 01:19

I'm not sure of it, but If I remember well, CCR started their performance in Woodstock, playing 'Born on the bayou' and they also performed a 10 minutes version of the song 'Susie Q'.

El Crab 12.05.2006 12:14
what songs did they play at woodstock?
I have them down for 11 songs:

Born On the Bayou
Green River
Ninety-Nine and a Half (Just Won't Do)
Bootleg
Commotion
Bad Moon Rising
Proud Mary
I Put a Spell On You
The Night Time Is the Right Time
Keep On Chooglin'
Susie Q

I don't know if that's the full set, but those are the songs I do have and in that order.

Forever-27 08.07.2007 09:06

Ive often wondered why CCR wasnt in the film or on the soundtrack. I have only spectulated that their set was so bad they refused to have it included. This is the reason The Grateful Dead, Santana and others didnt want to be in the woodstock film. A shame really since its the little things that make concerts memorable.

Jim Colyer 24.09.2007 07:23

CCR did not seem to fit at Woodstock. They were unique in so many ways. I had to convince my cousin recently that they were from the San Francisco area, not Louisiana.

dutchccr 21.07.2008 22:16

Found it!

This is CCR's Woodstock Setlist:

Born On The Bayou
Green River
Ninety-Nine And A Half (Won't Do)
Commotion
Bootleg
Bad Moon Rising
Proud Mary
I Put A Spell On You
Night Time Is The Right Time
Keep On Chooglin'
Suzy Q.
There is a bootleg with the complete setlist, and it's not hard to find on the internet! Just google and you'll find it...

suttongott 21.03.2009 08:35

Money

i saw a documentary that said Woodstock was originally conceived as a vehicle to promote creedence and the reason they weren't in the film or on the album was because they were upset that hendrix got paid and they didn't. i wonder if they still think they made the right decision? I would have done the same thing.

Creedence Clearwater Revival's catchy music was one of the true hightlights of the whole festival. Though they started late in the night from Saturday to Sunday (around 12.30) their blend of R&B, Folk- and Country-Rock didn't fail to impress. However, John Fogerty complained that the long set of The Grateful Dead delayed their set so most of the audience went to bed when CCR performed in the middle of the night

Born on the Bayou
Green River
Ninety-Nine and a Half (Won't Do)
Commotion
Bootleg
Bad Moon Rising
Proud Mary
I Put a Spell on You
The Night Time Is the Right Time
Keep on Chooglin'
Suzy Q
The setlist consists of material from their first three albums (the fourth album Willy and the Poor Boys was released in November 1969). There were no surprises, CCR chose only the hightlights. The performances are tight and upright. They rushed through "Green River", "Bad Moon Rising" and "Proud Mary" and left little room for improvisation. John Fogerty kept the tempo up and the band just followed him.
At the end they got a little bit more relaxed. The haunting "I Put a Spell on You" (written by Screamin' Jay Hawkins but nevertheless the opener on their self-titled debut album) hollows in the dark, followed by - the title says it all - "The Night Time Is the Right Time".
"Keep on Chooglin'", announced as their last number, includes a harmonica solo and lasts for over 9 minutes. The band then returned with the pretty "Suzy Q" as the encore and jammed for about 10 minutes before leaving the stage at Woodstock forever.

Confirmed, it was released in june, they have reinserted part of ccr's set in the new bluray version and it looks brandnew they really did a good job with the remastering

Here's my 5 minute review of their performance at Woodstock:

It's very difficult but also very easy to understand why CCR won't let their performance footage be used or seen some 40+ years after the event that some people have claimed was a pivotal moment for so many bands.

I have a bootleg of the performance - and must have been recorded off the soundboards or right onstage cause their sound is AWFULLY close - and to be honest, it wasn't one of their best.

I know i'm committing some kind of sacrilege here by knocking one of the greatest 60's & 70's bands of all time, but it has to be said. the music is rushed, even the long numbers, and John is constantly complaining throughout their set about some technical error that the rest of Woodstock must have heard.

By the way, their set clocks in at just under 45 minutes, and once again, their sound is very amateurish. Yes, they were pretty much rushed onstage after the usual 9-year long set by The Grateful Dead went over (big surprise), it was late at night, the hippie types were all partied out, and as can be heard on the bootleg, at least a few of The Great Unwashed clapped and cheered a bit after each song.

Now here is the setlist, according to my recording:

Born on the Bayou
Green River
Ninety-Nine and a Half
Bootleg
Commotion
Bad Moon Rising
Proud Mary
I Put a Spell on You
The Night Time Is the Right Time
Keep on Chooglin'
Suzy Q (their encore song)
Now, given that they were given zero time to prepare, it was late, the crowd was mostly asleep, and John was upset about a lousy setup onstage, they still rocked the hell out of those dirty hippies.

The song choices were right, Suzy Q goes on for 9 minutes alone, and it seemed even after all of the stuff that went against them, they still soldiered on and played their hearts out. By the end of the set, the hipsters were wide awake and they can be heard screaming for more.

I give their performance 2 1/2 stars - not their best, not their worst.

Now John has remarked that he hated this concert, and would never let it be seen forever. As of late 2009, a few performances have leaked out, and of course I've got the bootleg, and you can too as it's easily attainable online pretty much anywhere.

It would be a real shame that those of us who'd like to hear the entire set, digitally remastered, or at least in better sound (my bootleg is pretty crappy to decent in spots, so don't expect much yourself) will probably never get that chance.

As Jimi Hendrix's entire Woodstock appearance still hasn't been put out there, CCR's is much more overlooked as it doesn't exist anywhere (except illegally) and John & Co. are still alive and can rectifiy their error and put it out there...

Even if it's not the best of them, it's still CCR at Woodstock, doing the best that they can.

Thanks for reading.

nerdistmonk 13.11.2009 00:43

CCR (well fogerty) has authorized the use of the footage and it has been reissued with the Bluray of woodstock, only 3 songs as far as I know, the rest wasn't filmed thus they are not in the film. A black and white videotape camera caught a good part of it, but the batteries went dead at the end of chooglin. The 'blackstead' tapes have all the remastered ccr audio on them but they cost about a mil to buy.

CCR footage has been released, the whole performance was NOT taped/filmed
Only 4 songs were shot on 16mm color film, 3 songs were taped on bw tape
Film:
Born on the bayou
Bad Moon Rising
I put a spell on you
Keep on Chooglin
Tape:
Proud Mary (about a minutes worth, too far away to be audible since it was a stage cam)
The Night Time is the right time (bad audio)
Chooglin (Battery fails towards end)

CCR Audio has NOT been released (officially), the good audio that no one has heard will cost you a million bucks. (part of the blackstead woodstock masters, ccr doesnt own their taping of the performance by blackstead)

The blackstead tapes were used in the bluray version thus the amazingly good sound on the 3 songs that were released.

Well, there you go.

Peace, love and music is out the door, just pay me.

Yep. sad but true, Creedence didnt really come with alot of gear, there is 2 audio tapes of their performance, 2 color films' and 1 bw stage tape.

*Audio Tape 1: The soundboard tape, from the mixing trailer in the back of the stage, really bad quality due to mixing, 45 min, very common bootleg (This is what CCR heard and decided not to release, I agree)

*Blackstead Master Tape: High Quality Multi-track master tape. No mixing, was used to restore the audio on the bluray version.

Voyeur 05.12.2009 09:16

Tell ya what. The audio may not be perfect, but they ROCKED "Keep on Chooglin" that night!

oh yes chooglin was excellent on that concert and dont ask me what happened on the susie q recording, but chooglin is one of the performances that was remastered on bluray.

auriga24 14.02.2010 01:33

Hi Joel!!

They played:

1. Born on the Bayou
2. Green River
3. Ninety-Nine and a Half (Won't Do)
4. Bootleg
5. Commotion
6. Bad Moon Rising
7. Proud Mary
8. I Put a Spell on You
9. The Night Time is the Right Time
10. Keep on Chooglin'
11. Suzie Q

In that order

Seej 07.05.2012 03:10

The soundboard was bootlegged at the wrong speed, resulting in a higher pitch & faster tempo. Listening to Suzie Q on youtube, and it's obvious that it's not in E when the officially released videos on bluray are in correct pitch (all in the key of E). Even the bootlegged video copies of the early film edits are in E, apart from Bad Moon Rising in D.
