CCR = Southern Rock?

So I've been checking out the internet and views on Creedence. There seems to be a small debate as to whether or not they should be considered a "Southern Rock Band".

One guy said that he's from North Carolina (as am I) and there's "no way in Hell" he would consider them southern rock because they were from California.

While I do think Creedence transcends genres, they can be considered pioneers of southern rock. Yeah, they were from California but I don't think "southern" is a description of the "band" part...it's a description of the "rock" part. You must consider Creedence sang about bayous and riverboats and green rivers, inspired by blues, country and rockabilly artists from the south. Plus there's a wonderfully murky sound they created that feels southern. Add to that their look...cowboy boots, jeans, plaid flannel shirts and these boys were southern in spirit, at least.

Skynyrd's Ronnie Van Zant even cited Creedence his primary influence, which says a lot.

Besides, Fogerty and company didn't come from any swamp either, but nobody has a problem calling them Swamp Rock.

CCR doesnt have a genre, they were completely random, they played as they pleased, they would "rehearse" by playing sets live in advance before the item would be studio recorded, I have heard a CCR song for each genre...so have fun labeling them hehe

I'd say more Southern pop - rock....they were easy on the hard part of rock :)

Interestingly, Amazon ranks CCR's Chronicles album as the #1 selling Southern Rock album right now. But they also rank it #1 Rockabilly album, Country Rock album and Oldies & Retro album.

I wouldn't necessarily call Creedence pop. It's just pure rock and roll.
