They changed the name to Creedence Clearwater Revival, after a friend of a friend of Tom's, Credence Nuball. The first name, with its connotations of believability and integrity, appealed to the group. Clearwater also had two meanings. It came initially from a beer commercial, but also resonated with the burgeoning environmental movement of the time. Revival, however, had one meaning. It was the band's aspiration, that after four years as the Golliwogs, after ten years of playing together, this new change in their fortunes would take the band where they all knew it could go. John would often say, "The most important part was revival."

I agree, the name is incredibly good! There was no way people couldn't notise them with a name like that. I think the name is proud, in a way.

You know, the guys in the band were VERY embarassed about that name (The Golliwogs), and it was not them who chosed that name, it was their recordcompany. They hated it, actually, but they had no other choice than to accept it.

Up to and around the era, the names of bands were kinda that way. The Crickets, The Trogs, The Turtles,
The Monkeys, The Tokens, The Chipmunks, The Beatles... plus a ton more.
What a great name change, CCR ! BT

PS, What is a Golliwog ?

You don't know that? Or are you just testing me? Well, it's like a puppet, or a doll. Maybe you can use it about a scarecrow too, I'm not sure.
