Anonymous 04.12.2004 19:12

Am not sure but think it's about a riverboat called Proud Mary. Check out http://songfacts.com/detail.lasso?id=500 for more facts.

Hi,

John Fogerty once said he wrote "Proud Mary" just after he got a letter wich said he wouldn't have to go to the army any longer. He was so happy that he had to wrote this song, he said. He said this in VH-1 Storytellers.

bye.

Anonymous 11.04.2005 00:51

It seems like Proud Mary is a name for a boat, talks about a river and the big wheel that keeps on turnin...

Anonymous 02.06.2005 22:54

Proud Mary is about a poor working woman and the tribulations she's gone through yet she still maintains her dignity.

Anonymous 29.09.2005 22:56

What is the meaning of the lyric in proud mary "pumped a lot of tane down in New Orleans?"

Music Girl 30.09.2005 08:56

The correct lyric is "Pumped a lot pain down in New Orleans" not tane. Now I honestly don't know what it means. All I know is that it is one awesome song!!! I hope you have a nice day and ROCK ON!!!

Anonymous 07.10.2005 19:32

In this song he mentions having a few odd jobs, such as cleanin' plates in Memphis. The lyrics are 'tane, not pain. What he is saying here is that he pumped a lot of gas, tane being short for octane, a slang word for gas.

CCR, still great.

Now please, nobody laugh..... but, I used to think that this song was about weed.

"Proud Mary" = Mary Jane
Rolling = Being High
never lost sleep worrying what might have been= no worries when you are high

Hi there. Could anybody tell me who was meant by the "man" in working for the Man every night and day?

Anonymous 30.01.2006 03:09

Proud mary about weed? CCR was'nt a drug band, John fogerty hated drugs. The man was 60's slang for a person in a position of athourity

hitbit 12.10.2007 01:15

The man

Boss

ToolCCR 24.06.2012 01:28

It's about LIFE. Working odd jobs, moving about the country trying to find your way. And you'll find people who live and give on "the river" of life. My interpretation.

Proud Mary - escape from a mundane life to the romance of the river

Left a good job in the city (Used to work a 'normal' job in the city)
Workin' for the man ev'ry night and day (regular hours working for a boss)
And I never lost one minute of sleepin' (and once he'd left he had no doubts)
Worryin' 'bout the way things might have been (or second thoughts)

Big wheel keep on turnin' (The single paddle wheel of a stern wheeler)
Proud Mary keep on burnin' (Proud Mary is a paddle steamer - coal fired)
Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river (The 'big wheel' looks almost like it rolls along the river)

Cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis (Washed dishes in Memphis)
Pumped a lot of pain ['tane/'pane - octane/propane] down in New Orleans(Pumped gas in New Orleans)
But I never saw the good side of the city (But didn't see the best of either city)
'Til I hitched a ride on a river boat queen (until he saw it from the perspective of the river)

Chorus

If you come down to the river (An invitation to do the same thing)
Bet you gonna find some people who live (People who work on the river live a more 'real' life)
You don't have to worry 'cause you have [if you got] no money (Anyone can live on the river - even the poorest)
People on the river are happy to give (because river people are generous and welcoming)

Chorus

Very nice interpretation of the song!

itcameoutofthesky 26.10.2013 10:56

Sometimes writers (including John Fogerty ) want people to make up their own stories when they hear a song. It's up to your own imagination what you see or hear in a song. Isn't that wonderful ? :)

This is a very good and accurate explanation of this song...
Thank you sir!

ashrafeltantawy 28.01.2018 05:42

I love Tina turner btw :D

I left a good job in the city
Working for the man every night and day
And I never lost one minute of sleeping
I was worrying 'bout the way the things might've been…

this song is so amazing ;)

The correct lyric is Pumped a lot of 'pane' down in New Orleans and it's short for propane. He's talking about pumping gas.
