Why not country?

How come CCR cant be considered country. Some of theirs ongs are country sounding - by that i mean the good old country

Because allot of their songs arn't country, therfore allot of country purists would disagree to label them as that. Although I admit John was heavily influenced by some country music. I watched 'Cool Hand Luke' the other day and one of the chain gang members was singing while Newman was digging a hole. I heard him sing a stripped down pure blues country version of both 'Midnight Special' and 'Cotton Fields' and it hit me like a blue grass band would. I don't know who sung these songs first, but any version moves me.

CCR is not country because John Fogerty's voice does not have a country sound. Plus, many of the lyrics are anti-war and country is mostly pro-war. And, every country band has that country-sounding slide guitar and Creedence does not use one of those (I'm pretty sure). I get very aggravated when people call Creedence Clearwater "country".

A clue to the amount of influence country and western music had on CCR can be seen in John's first post-CCR solo record, The Blue Ridge Rangers, which is all covers of classic and traditional c&w songs. Definitely lots of country and western in CCR! Along with bluegrass, r&B, blues, honkytonk, rockabilly, zydeco. One tasty gumbo!

Yeah, and it is also a song by Bob Seger. But his name is most likely a referece to the CCR song "Travelin' Band"
